What is CSEUnited?

California State Employees United (CSEUnited) is a grassroots movement of SEIU Local 1000 members dedicated to helping bring back ownership of our union back to the members.

CSEUnited believes in:
  • Members first - when we are strong and well established as a force to be reckoned with, then we can think about outside “organizing” activities. Our own members are our single most important asset
  • A strong steward and union leadership program that includes ongoing training and mentoring
  • An effective member representation program that ensures that our contract is strongly enforced and members who need assistance receive quality services
  • Protecting the civil service system and ensuring that the contributions of our members to the people of California are respected
  • Continue to fight outsourcing state jobs.
  • Eliminating the top-heavy management structure in our union.  Our union has become a bureaucracy paying for unnecessary management positions at the expense of professional staff dedicated to representational work
  • Hiring experienced labor representatives that will fight for us.  With staff handling representational work, our stewards and other member leaders can then focus on organizing around campaigns.
  • Strong, professional contract negotiations
  • Living within our means
Brief History

CSEUnited formed in 2005 initially as a vehicle to organize reform candidates to the union election at the time.  After only barely a month, we managed to run a statewide ticket that included over 200 reform candidates.  Many of these candidates won leadership positions in the union's district labor councils (DLC or local chapter).

We also helped elect the Local 1000's Secretary-Treasurer.  However, the incumbent filed what we believed to be a frivolous election protest.  A committee hand-picked by the then Local 100 President (and the running mate of the incumbent) overturned the election.  The election was rerun and resulted in the incumbent staying in office.

The Fight Continues

CSEUnited continues our campaign of educating and organizing to bring about a strong, active and engaged membership.  Our most recent effort revolved around the dues increase approved in 2006.  We forced the leadership of the union to amend the original dues proposal and to put the second dues increase scheduled to take effect in July 2010 to a direct vote of the membership.
