No Dues Increase Campaign

In October 2006, despite massive protest from members statewide, Local 1000 delegates approved one of the largest dues increase in the union's history.

Local 1000 President Jim Hard and Secretary-Treasurer Cathy Hackett were two of the early proponents of the dues hike.  It was during their watch that the union faced a seven million dollar budget deficit that they argued necessitated the dues increase.

CSEUnited led the effort to oppose the dues hike plan and called for an in depth review of the union's financial condition to look for potential savings in-house prior to asking our members to pay more.  We also called for a review of one of the largest expense of Local 1000 - the almost $15 million annual "per capita" payments to SEIU International.

We also lobbied to have the members have a direct vote on the dues proposal.  Hard, Hackett, Walker and Bautista initially opposed this.  When it became clear that the opposition to the dues increase won't fade away, the officers relented and submitted a motion to put the second dues increase to take effect in July 2010 to a membership vote.  The officers then had the audacity to take credit for the idea that CSEUnited has advocated from the beginning.

In what many speculated was an attempt to deflect adverse reaction during Hard and Hackett's reelection campaign, the union's two other officers, Yvonne Walker and Marc Bautista offered the amended dues motion that was ultimately adopted by the delegates.

Hackett and Bautista later bowed out of running from statewide office.  However, Yvonne Walker and Jim Hard are now asking for your support in reelecting them as statewide officers of the union.
